Sit Teik Tong (Gongsi) in Singapore

Sit Teik Tong is the name given to the Gongsi, or the clan association of Xiayang Yeo’s. Penang Yeoh K(G)ongsi and Yangon Yeo Gongsi were separately founded in 1834 and 1854. Both of them have beautiful Gongsi buildings and both are still in these two places serving and caring for Yeo descendants from Xiyang in Fujian, China. Was there a Yeo Gongsi in Singapore too?

Old newspapers, archived official documents, some organisation publications and a few personal memorabilia outline together a very brief presence of Yeo Gongsi in Singapore.

In 1931, a Singapore Yeo Gongsi was registered as Sam Tor Har Yang (Yeo See) Sit Teck Tong. In January 1932, Yeo Cheang Ann from Penang Kongsi visited Singapore Gongsi and took a photo together. Identified from the photo were Yeo Beng Teck(1888-1959) 、Yeo Tiam Siew(1904 – 2000)、and Yeo Cheow Hpyeow (1901-1980).  Annual General Meetings were held from 1933-1935. After that no reports were made for many years except about a humble donation given to a Patriotic Fund in 1940. Then in June and July, 1949, there were public calls, over different days on several newspaper advertisements, inviting clan members from Har Yang (Xiayang) for an anniversary meeting . Names of Yeo Beng Teck and Yeo Cheow Hypyeow appeared in these calls.

Separately, Yeo Tiam Siew in his personal memoir, , published in 1993, wrote that the Singapore Gongsi was started with a handful of members in Singapore in August 1931. He also lamented that the Gongsi “could not be resuscitated after World War II in September 1945”, principally because of the small number of ‘YEOs’ of the Har-Yang Village in Singapore at that time.

Thus, the Yeo Gongsi, or, Sam Tor Har Yang (Yeo See) Sit Teck Tong, survived not more than 20 years. A newspaper report in 1956 on society registration actually announced that, Sam Tor Har Yang (Yeo See) Sit Teck Tong, had been ‘exempted from registration’.

A few addresses were revealed: 178, 188 Telok Ayer Street, 12 China Street, 63 Arab Street and 295 Jalan Besar, the last two being office and residence addresses of Yeo Beng Teck.

However, no definite, more permanent official addresses could be ascertained for the short-lived Singapore Yeo Gongsi.

Our father, Yeo Cheang Hong, on his own at his first arrival, in 1935 in Singapore from Xiayang, had to take his shared accommodation in this Yeo Gongsi. He was seen in the last photo here, apparently in a tight corner, and not exactly in a comfortable position, shaving. It was lucky for him to register his short but memorable presence in this community hall endowed with ancestral blessings.
