STT Scholars

Mandate in Constitution

Yeo Cheow Kaw founded Xiayang Primary School in Xiayang in 1904, and took over Teong Hwa Chinese School in Rangoon in 1907.In 1925, he built the clan house Sit Teik Tong (STT) in Rangon/Yangon. In the constitution of STT in 1925, the tenth chapter clearly stipulated that Xiayang Primary School’s expenses, would be totally borne by STT, and even stated a yearly maximum of 4,000 yuan.

What is the value of these four thousand yuan? One could perhaps gain some ideas from a report by Xiayang SST, as follows.

“At the beginning of the Republic, STT from both Rangoon and Penang each remitted 1,000 yuan in silver every month, totaling 2,000 yuan, which was used to first fund Xiayang Primary School. It was also used to support various utilities such as street lightings, garbage disposals and subsidies for night patrols, besides general poverty alleviation matters. Unfortunately, these overseas remittances of overseas Chinese were cut off during the Japanese invasion of China…”

There were detailed regulations on how to fund and reward graduates to continue their studies to middle school, university, and even study abroad in the Constitution articles. Moreover, potential scholars were not limited to come from Xiayang Primary School or Chung Hwa School from Rangoon. As long as they were children from a family of Xiayang Yeo, they could apply.

STT Scholars

There are several group photos of STT Committee members in the 1950s and 60s in STT. A plaque hung on the back wall is written in both Chinese and English.

There should be little doubt that this Professor Hla Kyaw won a SST scholarship to study in Cambridge.

Yeo Gwan Htong (1894-1935), the eldest son of Yeo Cheng Him, another overseas Chinese in Rangoon,  was also an STT Scholar. His first service in the STT committee was to author the inscription on the STT Inauguration Tablet in 1924. He was invited to join the board of trustees of STT.  Later he was appointed as the manager of the Chinese newspaper “Burma New Daily”. He returned to China in 1929 and raised funds in Xiamen to establish the Overseas Chinese Daily in 1930. During his stay in Xiamen, he worked with the Xiayang Village people to improve the standard of living, developed wasteland, and greened the hills. In March 1993, his descendants inherited his legacy and donated HK$110,000 to Xiayang Primary School to establish the “Yeo Gwan Htong Scholarship and Education Foundation”.
